This time next week we’ll be on our way to Africa.
Those words alone are enough to send shivers of excitement, wonder and fear through me. This trip, my dream adventure since I was a child, is more than a little daunting as it draws near.
Our friends have cancelled due to injury, so we’re heading out on our own. Not that we’re really “on our own”. Rhino Africa has our back; they’ve arranged transfers to every lodge and every airport. We just need to show up!
Well meaning people are asking about ebola (check out the infographic from the Safari Company), but we are a continent away from the outbreak. In fact, the closest we’ll get to the virus is the airport in Atlanta.
Eleanor Roosevelt is quoted as saying, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” There’s some question whether she spoke those words exactly or similar thoughts in this quote- “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face… do the thing you think you cannot do.”
Either way, I’m guessing that this trip will give me ample opportunity to go beyond my comfort zone – to see the world with new eyes and find in myself a new courage.
