“And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.”

Hi! I’m Amy, the writer behind the Traveling Tulls. I have always been an animal lover, memorizing every breed of dog as a child, and celebrating all my birthday parties in nature reserves. As a child of the 60s, I embraced environmental movements, and got my degree in biology, with a focus on ecology. I spent my working life in public libraries, but continued my passion for the outdoors in my volunteer work.

Dave and I met in the fall of my first year of college and have been together ever since – 50+ years! As most people do, we’ve had our struggles financially and physically. But we’ve weathered the storms (including two bouts with cancer) and know how lucky we are to have each other, our family, and a strong community of friends.

With our kids now grown, we’ve made travel a priority. And as living sustainably is also important to us, we made adjustments to create a smaller carbon footprint. We sold our family home, moved into an energy efficient condo (where we can walk or bike to everything!), invested in a hybrid vehicle, and ramped up our environmental volunteer work.

I began this website as a means of sharing our adventures with family (translation: reassuring Mom and Dad that we were OK when we were away) but continue writing to encourage appreciation of the natural world and share insights into responsible travel.

My years of library work, and degree in biology and mathematics, might give you insight into my travel strategies. I research every destination thoroughly before booking, then work on planning the most efficient packing lists, and the most ethical activities to enjoy. I genuinely love this part of trip planning and am happy to share what I’ve learned.

As a women over 60, I recognize there are challenges AND advantages to traveling in retirement and share strategies for making the best of these “golden years”. I hope some of these tips will work for you.

Our Team Bio

Dave has spent his career in business, traveling often and accruing some much-appreciated hotel and airline points. In addition to these travel perks Dave has accumulated an impressive collection of guitars.

Amy is retired from a career in public libraries. She brings her love of research and reading to their trip planning. She begins researching destinations and travel options when there’s even a hint of a trip, and she LOVES preparing packing lists. Amy is an avid birder and works with several environmental organizations.

Amy and Dave spend a lot of time crossing the US to visit family (they have SEVEN grandchildren now!) but try for one or two special trips a year. Both enjoy cycling, photography, and sunset suppers with friends.

Sometimes my writing isn’t about a destination or a specific trip, just random Thoughts of a Traveler.

    1. Hi Barbara, what an interesting idea for travel. I only include things in the site which I believe will benefit my readers. So though no guarantees that I’ll add the boxes to my site, I’d be happy to try them. You can contact me at travelingtulls @gmail.com.

      Thanks for reaching out!
